The Government is considering requests from various sectors to revise the retirement age of public sector employees, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the new kidney stone treatment unit at the Mirigama Hospital, the Minister said several professional groups had requested an extension of the retirement age.

He said requests had been received from members of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Courts, as well as from certain professionals in the health sector and the Department of Prisons.

“Requests have already been received from various professional groups. Not only from the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and High Courts, but also from some professionals in the health service and the Department of Prisons,” he said.

“Some professionals believe they are capable of continuing to work for a longer period and have requested an increase in the retirement age. Some may oppose the proposal, but as a Government, we are considering these requests,” the Minister added.
