Two inmates have died amid unrest at the Kuruwita Prison, where authorities used tear gas to bring the situation under control.

The unrest initially broke out on Wednesday (6) night and was brought under control, according to a Prisons Department spokesman.

However, fresh unrest erupted among inmates on Thursday (7) morning.

During the disturbance, a group of inmates reportedly caused damage to the prison hospital.

Kuruwita Police said tear gas was fired in an effort to control the situation.

Meanwhile, a separate disturbance was reported among inmates at the Welikada Magazine Prison on Wednesday night.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said the situation at the Magazine Prison had since been completely brought under control.
