A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly filming the official residences of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Justice in Colombo.

The suspect was arrested by Cinnamon Gardens Police last night (6), while the mobile phone allegedly used to record the videos was also taken into police custody.

Police said an officer attached to the Special Task Force (STF), who was on duty at the main entrance to the IGP’s official residence, had observed a man arriving in a luxury vehicle, stopping nearby and filming the road outside the residence.

The STF officer subsequently alerted a police constable engaged in traffic duty nearby, who informed the Colombo Emergency Division.

Acting on the information, a night patrol team from the Cinnamon Gardens Police arrived at the location, conducted preliminary inquiries and arrested the suspect.

According to Police, an examination of the suspect’s mobile phone revealed footage of the IGP’s official residence and the surrounding roads, as well as the Chief Justice’s official residence and nearby roads.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly claimed that he had filmed the locations as a hobby.

However, a senior police officer said the suspect had provided contradictory information regarding his place of residence and other matters during further questioning.

The suspect is reportedly a 40-year-old resident of Niudawa Road, Aruggoda, Alubomulla.

Cinnamon Gardens Police are conducting further investigations.
