Sri Lankan student fatally stabbed by compatriot in Japan

Police in Nagareyama City, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested an 18-year-old Sri Lankan national on suspicion of murder, after he allegedly stabbed a 21-year-old Sri Lankan man with a knife.

Police said both men were international students and lived at the same residence, NHK reported. According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday at a home where the suspect stabbed the victim in the abdomen with a knife.

The suspect called 119. The victim was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead. Police questioned an 18-year-old Sri Lankan international student who was at the scene and arrested him after he admitted stabbing his compatriot.

Police said the two were acquaintances and quoted the suspect as saying “I snapped and stabbed him because I was called a derogatory name for a gay man, my mother was insulted, and I was punched.” (Japan Today)
