The Fort Magistrate’s Court has reported to the Court of Appeal allegations that several prominent politicians and activists may have committed contempt of court by publicly commenting on the ongoing judicial proceedings involving former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Suresh Sallay.

The individuals named are former MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Dilith Jayaweera and Asanka Navaratne, as well as Sugeeshwara Bandara and Mahinda Pathirana.

The Magistrate’s Court took the step after considering statements allegedly made to the media while the case was pending before court. The remarks are alleged to have questioned the judicial process and potentially interfered with or influenced the ongoing proceedings.

The matter is expected to be considered by the Court of Appeal to determine whether the individuals concerned have committed contempt of court and whether further legal action should be taken.
