The Sri Lanka Air Force said 1,029 individuals who were caught spitting betel and urinating at various locations within the renovated Colombo Pettah Central Bus Stand had been made to clean the areas they had soiled.
The group reportedly included several bus drivers and conductors.
According to the Air Force, the offenders were identified through a round-the-clock CCTV surveillance system operating within the bus terminal.
The system is also being used to monitor activities that could cause inconvenience or harassment to passengers.
Twenty-five Air Force personnel, supervised by Squadron Leader Indika Wickramasinghe, are engaged in monitoring the terminal. A total of 64 security cameras are being used to conduct 88 daily surveillance checks.
Over the past seven months, the CCTV system has detected 1,286 incidents at the bus terminal.
Based on the footage, 64 individuals allegedly involved in stealing passengers’ bags and money, other illegal activities and damaging property at the terminal were arrested and handed over to the Police.
