A man accused of defrauding an individual of Rs. 1.2 million by promising employment in Israel has been arrested by the Police Unit of the Special Investigations Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).
According to investigations, the suspect had contested the last General Election from the Kalutara District and had also allegedly presented himself as a Presidential Coordinating Secretary during the previous Government.
It is alleged that the suspect took the complainant to the SLBFE head office in an attempt to gain his confidence before carrying out the fraud.
The suspect was produced before the Colombo No. 5 Magistrate’s Court and was ordered to be remanded until 14 October.
At the time of his arrest, investigators also recovered a stock of allegedly forged documents prepared in connection with recruitment for office assistant positions at the Ministry of Ports and Aviation.
The SLBFE further said investigations had revealed that the suspect had allegedly been involved in similar scams for a considerable period, using the names of senior Bureau officials.
