Victor Ivan, the veteran journalist, social activist, and former Editor of the Ravaya newspaper, has passed away at the age of 75, his family confirmed.

Ivan, who had been receiving treatment at a hospital for several months, was celebrated for his pioneering investigative journalism and unyielding commitment to exposing corruption. His fearless work not only transformed journalism in Sri Lanka but also championed judicial independence, challenging political interference in the justice system.

A Marxist rebel in his youth, Ivan transitioned into a bold voice for truth, serving as the Editor of Ravaya for 25 consecutive years since its inception. Starting as a monthly magazine in 1986 during a period of violent youth insurrections, Ravaya grew under his leadership into a widely read weekly newspaper. Its unrelenting commitment to uncovering corruption made it a critical voice in Sri Lankan media.

Victor Ivan was also an accomplished author, with notable works including Chaurya Rajina (The Queen of Deceit), a critical account of Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s presidency, and Pansale Viplawaya (Revolt in the Temple), which examined the Buddhist revival and its socio-political impact.

His passing marks the end of an era for Sri Lankan journalism, leaving behind a legacy of courage, intellect, and relentless pursuit of justice.
