The Cabinet has approved the implementation of the “New Sapiri Rural Credit Scheme – Sarusara” as an annual programme starting in 2025.

The “Sarusara” scheme aims to provide interest subsidies to support minor and small-scale farmers engaged in short-term crop cultivation and gardening. Initially launched in 2020, the programme was implemented by the Department of Rural Development of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

However, following the enactment of the new Central Bank Act, the Central Bank can no longer operate concessionary loan schemes. In response, the government has decided to transfer the programme’s administration to the Department of Development Finance under the General Treasury.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, presented the proposal, which received Cabinet approval.
