Sri Lanka must embrace the future with determination rather than remain bound by the past, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared at the 77th Independence Day celebrations at Independence Square in Colombo.

Addressing the nation, he underscored the shared aspirations of Sri Lankans across the country—to build a modern, united nation that upholds economic and socio-cultural independence.

“There is a journey ahead for every citizen,” he said. “A collective journey that ensures not just political freedom, but the right to live as a modern, dignified citizen.”

President Dissanayake emphasised the need to break free from global economic pressures through a united national effort. “To attain economic freedom, we must all dedicate ourselves together,” he asserted.

Envisioning a progressive Sri Lanka, he assured, “The nation we pass on to future generations will not merely be the one shaped by history, but one they can take pride in—a country respected for its cultural and human values.”

He urged citizens to seize the current moment as an opportunity to redefine Sri Lanka’s future. “We have no justifiable reason to let this moment slip away. The Sri Lanka we entrust to you must be carried forward with greater energy than we possess today.”

Stressing the fundamental duty of humanity, he added, “Our responsibility is to foster a world of good humanity, where all can live with dignity and equality.”

Calling for unity, he concluded, “Let us dream of true independence together, and let us make it a reality. We may not become the richest country in the world, but with effort, we can become an exemplary nation—one that embodies the richest national spirit through equality and freedom.”
