Palaly Road Opening Not Acceptable from Military Standpoint – Fonseka

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has raised concerns over what he describes as several shortcomings in the current security strategy for Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern provinces.

Speaking on a special Derana TV programme held in line with National War Heroes Day, Fonseka said certain recent decisions—such as the closure of military camps in strategic locations and the opening of roads through the high-security Palaly base in Jaffna—are unacceptable from a professional military standpoint.

He further cautioned that limiting the role of the armed forces to within camps is a dangerous move. “We must not assume that the diaspora in countries like Canada lacks the capacity to produce even a dozen suicide bombers in Jaffna,” Fonseka warned.

Citing the Easter Sunday attacks as an example, he stressed that if such militants were to launch an attack, the government may be forced to re-establish hundreds of military camps. “We must take responsibility to ensure such a situation never arises again,” he emphasised.
