Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahuman said that the party will reveal its nominee for the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) today (3 June).
He explained that since no group secured a 50% majority in the CMC, the Mayor must be elected through a vote. Rahuman added that discussions with independent groups and political parties had yielded positive responses, and all parties involved had agreed to support the SJB in forming a majority within the council.
Meanwhile, the National People’s Power (NPP) has nominated Vrai Kalei Balthazaar as its candidate for the mayoral post.
Separately, Elections Commission General Saman Sri Ratnayake said a gazette notification will soon be issued to empower provincial commissioners to carry out administrative functions in local government bodies where power struggles have stalled operations.
As of yesterday, 161 local authorities, including 28 municipal councils, 36 urban councils, and 275 pradeshiya sabhas, officially began functioning.
