Acting Inspector General of Police (AIGP)Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to investigate the ongoing harassment of a Mahiyanganaya resident by local police officers and submit a report within two weeks.

The victim, Podi Kumarihami, approached the IGP during Public Day, alleging that she was repeatedly harassed and threatened by associates of the police. She revealed that she had been falsely accused in 38 cases for opposing illegal sand smuggling involving police officers. Despite being acquitted of all charges, Kumarihami claimed that police reprisals continue, including threats made in front of her home, where officers allegedly brandished firearms.

She presented the IGP with evidence and documents supporting her claims of ongoing retaliation. Acting swiftly, the IGP directed the SIU to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations and the sequence of events surrounding them.
