The University of Colombo has issued a statement warning the public about several misleading social media posts that are misusing the university’s name to promote unverified claims related to herbal medicines.

The clarification comes following reports circulating on social media claiming that the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) of the University of Colombo has developed a new nutritional drug capable of destroying cancer cells, as a result of 17 years of research. The reports further claimed that a research team led by Professor Sameera R. Samarakoon had formulated the compound using five local medicinal plants.

In response, the University stressed that while several research projects are indeed being conducted to investigate the medicinal properties of herbal preparations, none of these studies have yet reached the clinical trial stage or drug registration. Therefore, they cannot be regarded or promoted as approved medicines.

The university further warned that the dissemination of misleading or exaggerated claims not only harms its reputation but also poses serious risks to patient safety. It noted that legal or disciplinary action may be taken against those responsible for spreading such misinformation.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the University stated that the general public will be kept informed about its research and development activities only through the university’s official website and verified social media platforms.

Patients were also advised to continue using only registered medicines prescribed by qualified medical professionals.

“The University of Colombo remains committed to the highest ethical and professional standards of research and innovation,” the statement concluded.
