The Mount Lavinia Police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a police officer allegedly assaulted a lawyer within the premises of the Mount Lavini Magistrate’s Court on the 10th.
According to complaints, the altercation occurred when the lawyer’s car was being removed from the court premises. The police officer involved was subsequently arrested by the Mount Lavinia Police and produced before court, after which he was remanded until 13 October.
Reports indicate that the investigation also covers allegations that a senior lawyer, who was present at the scene with the assaulted attorney, verbally threatened the police officer and attempted to obstruct his official duties.
A CD containing CCTV footage of the incident—reportedly showing the exchange between the lawyer and the police officer—has been handed over to police investigators as evidence.
Statements have been recorded from several individuals who witnessed the incident. The ongoing investigation is being conducted under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the Mount Lavinia Division.
