Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Kalutara District MP Jagath Vithana told Parliament today that he has received a confidential notification sent by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to the several senior Police officers, detailing an alleged plot to assassinate him.
Addressing Parliament this morning (24), Vithana said the document, marked as a secret communication from the IGP to the Kalutara Deputy Inspector General and the Senior Superintendent of Police, explicitly stated that he was to be “shot and killed” as he stepped out of his vehicle at home. The MP further claimed that the notification named the individual assigned to carry out the killing.
“I am tabling this confidential document in Parliament today because my life is in danger,” Vithana declared, urging the Speaker and other members to take immediate measures to ensure his safety.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa who intervened at this moment described the revelation as a grave and urgent matter concerning the security of an Opposition parliamentarian. He stressed that safeguarding the lives of MPs was a fundamental responsibility of the Speaker and Parliament itself.
“This cannot be postponed or ignored. What security can be provided after a life is lost?” he asked, highlighting what he described as inadequate protection for Opposition lawmakers and local representatives.
Responding to a question from the Deputy Speaker, Vithana said he had only received the IGP’s notification the previous day (23) and would submit a copy of it to the Speaker as well.
