Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya will step down from his role following the team’s final Super Eight fixture against Pakistan at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, according to local and international media reports.

Jayasuriya, who had indicated he would not continue beyond the tournament despite his contract remaining valid, was initially appointed interim coach for the India series in July 2024. He was later confirmed as full-time head coach the same year. During his tenure, Sri Lanka played more than 70 matches across formats, recording a near-even balance of wins and defeats.

Sri Lanka’s campaign ended in disappointment after successive defeats in the Super Eights, including an underwhelming chase against New Zealand that confirmed their elimination. The loss drew rare boos from a 35,000-strong home crowd in Colombo and intensified calls for sweeping structural changes within the national setup.

Reports further suggest that captain Dasun Shanaka and members of the national selection panel are also facing mounting pressure to resign or risk dismissal as scrutiny deepens over the team’s performance and administration.
