Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva has expressed regret before the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate coal procurements, over remarks he made during a May Day rally concerning the commission’s work.
Silva appeared before the commission in response to a summons and, together with his legal representatives, submitted a sworn affidavit expressing regret for the comments made during his speech.
The commission had summoned Silva after he claimed at the May Day rally that the commission would clear members of the National People’s Power (NPP) Government of wrongdoing while finding opposition figures guilty. The commission viewed the remarks as an attempt to interfere with its proceedings and as a threat to its independence.
After considering Silva’s explanation and his expression of regret, the commission decided to release him with a warning.
The commission is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga and includes Court of Appeal Justice Adithya Patabendige and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somaratne as members.
