The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has clarified that it did not represent lawyer Rakhitha Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), during court proceedings.

In a statement issued on Friday (26), the BASL said media reports claiming that the association made submissions during Thursday’s hearing before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court were inaccurate.

The association explained that its role in matters involving its members is limited to observing court proceedings and reporting relevant information to the BASL for any future action deemed necessary.

The BASL further stated that its Executive Committee had not authorised any lawyer to make submissions on behalf of the association in the case, nor had it decided to appear on behalf of the arrested lawyer.
