Man Dies After Father-in-Law Intervenes to Protect Daughter from Domestic Violence

A 26-year-old man died after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation at his wife’s parental home in Ambalantota, police said.

The incident occurred on Saturday night (7) in Ambalantota. The man was admitted to the Ambalantota Base Hospital with severe head injuries and later succumbed to his injuries.

According to police investigations, the deceased and his wife had reportedly been experiencing ongoing domestic violence, following which the woman had returned to her parents’ house.

Police said the man had arrived at the house on Saturday night in a tipper truck. Preliminary investigations indicate that he allegedly damaged the property’s main gate before entering the premises.

A confrontation and assualt subsequently broke out inside the house. Police said the woman had attempted to move to another room to avoid the husband assaulting her.

Investigators allege that during the incident, the woman’s father intervened in an attempt to protect his daughter. In the course of the altercation, he allegedly struck the victim with a wooden pole, causing serious injuries.

The man was rushed to hospital but later died while receiving treatment.

The father-in-law has been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are being conducted by the Ambalantota Police.
