Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has dismissed a call by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara for all opposition parties to unite against the government at future elections regardless of policy differences, corruption allegations or other controversies.
Responding to questions during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa said there was no need for opposition politicians accused of corruption, theft or promoting racist ideologies to come together, as they were already aligned.
He further claimed that several upcoming court rulings would naturally drive more opposition politicians facing various allegations into the same political camp.
“There is no need for them to unite separately. They are already together. I think once another two or three court verdicts are delivered, they will become even more united,” Jayatissa said.
His remarks came in response to comments made by Jayasekara during a recent television interview, in which the opposition MP argued that all opposition forces should at least reach a non-contest agreement to defeat the current government at future elections.
Jayasekara acknowledged that such an alliance could include politicians with nationalist views as well as individuals facing allegations of corruption, theft and other misconduct, but maintained that all opposition groups should unite with the common objective of defeating the incumbent administration.
