Sri Lanka is unlikely to revise water tariffs during the next six months, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe said.
The minister said the National Water Supply and Drainage Board had not incurred a significant increase in water treatment costs during the first half of the year, reducing the need for a tariff revision.
He explained that although electricity tariffs had increased by 18%, electricity accounts for only about 12% of the water tariff. As a result, the overall impact on water production costs amounted to only around Rs. 2.50 per unit of water.
“The cost increase over the past six months has been minimal. Therefore, it is highly likely that there will be no revision of water tariffs for the next six months as well,” the minister said.
Water tariffs are reviewed every six months. Earlier this year, the government also decided not to revise tariffs for the first half of 2026.
