The Ministry of Education has launched an urgent investigation into the tragic suicide of a 23-year-old second-year student at the Wayamba National College of Education in Bingiriya.

The student, identified as Sanjeewani Kumari from Teldeniya in Kandy, was found in her dormitory on the afternoon of 23 September. According to the Police Media Unit, a fellow hostel mate discovered her and alerted the Bingiriya Police. Authorities confirmed the student’s death was by suicide, although the exact cause remains under investigation.

In response to a query by Ada Derana, President of the College, P.V. Lal Kumara, confirmed that the Ministry had initiated a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, serious allegations have emerged from within the institution. Fellow students claim that Sanjeewani had been subjected to ongoing psychological harassment by a lecturer, which they allege may have driven her to take her own life. Her peers staged a protest on the evening of 24 September, demanding justice and an impartial investigation into the events leading to her death.

Student demonstrators expressed outrage over what they described as a toxic academic environment and called on the Ministry of Education to take swift action against those responsible.
