Two former Sri Lanka Navy women officers were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (20) in connection with the alleged abduction and disappearance of two women, Shashikumar Thenmoli and Mary Delshiya, in Trincomalee in 2008.
The suspects have been identified as former Navy women officers Deepa Sandamali and Aruni Kaws. They are due to be produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court today (21).
The two women officers had previously been arrested by the CID in connection with a separate case involving a man identified as Shantha from Kegalle, who was allegedly arrested in the Alawwa area and subsequently disappeared. They had been produced before the Polgahawela Magistrate’s Court in connection with that case and are currently out on bail.
The latest arrests were made when the two suspects reported to the CID to sign in accordance with bail conditions imposed in the Shantha disappearance case. They were arrested in connection with a separate investigation into the disappearance of Thenmoli and Mary Delshiya.
During investigations into Shantha’s disappearance, information had reportedly emerged that individuals had been unlawfully detained at a secret detention facility known as “Gun Site” within the Trincomalee Naval Base.
The two former Navy women officers had previously been arrested following information uncovered during investigations into the alleged secret detention facility.
