Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced that several Members of Parliament representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will resign from their seats to contest the upcoming Provincial Council elections.

He made this announcement yesterday (11) at the inauguration ceremony of the D.S. Senanayake Faculty of Political Science and Sustainable Development, held under his patronage at the SJB headquarters.

Premadasa said the MPs in question have decided to relinquish their parliamentary positions to contest the Provincial Council polls with the aim of establishing a Samagi Jana Balawegaya–led administration.

Highlighting the rarity of such actions while in opposition, he remarked:

“Why are these sacrifices and contributions being made to win the Provincial Councils? It is to strengthen and uplift our party. It is indeed rare to see such great sacrifices while in opposition. These decisions are being made with the ultimate goal of forming a Samagi Jana Balawegaya government — and electing a Samagi Jana Balawegaya President.”
