Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara informed court today (13) that the drafting of indictments against Namal Rajapaksa in connection with the Airbus deal had been completed under the Bribery Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
He said the prosecution intended to file the indictments before a three-judge High Court bench.
Accordingly, the Deputy Solicitor General said a request would be made to the Chief Justice today or tomorrow to appoint a three-judge High Court bench in accordance with the provisions of the Judicature Act, paving the way for indictments to be filed in the near future.
Bandara further informed court that, in light of these developments, today could be Rajapaksa’s final appearance before the Magistrate’s Court in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, opposing bail, the Deputy Solicitor General argued that the legal provisions applicable to the case allowed the suspect to be kept in remand custody until the conclusion of the trial.
He maintained that the completion of investigations alone could not constitute sufficient grounds for granting bail.
