Two persons, including Dammith Fonseka, son of veteran film actor Gamini Fonseka, were arrested by Sigiriya wildlife officers today (29) for allegedly excavating an agricultural well and cutting down trees without permission on privately owned land within the Sigiriya Sanctuary.
The raid was conducted following a tip-off received by wildlife officers.
Officials also seized a backhoe used for the excavation, a lorry, a tractor and logs from the felled trees.
The suspects were subsequently released on bail under wildlife laws and are due to appear before the Dambulla Magistrate’s Court on 31 August.
Sigiriya Wildlife Office Range Protection Officer S.S. Malinda said prior approval from the Department of Wildlife Conservation was required for any excavation, tree felling or construction carried out within the sanctuary, even on privately owned land.
The suspects reportedly told wildlife officers that they were unaware of the legal requirement because the work had been carried out on private property.
