A cameraman from a Sirasa TV has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault on a security officer attached to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on September 30.
Police Spokesperson F.U. Wootler told Asian Mirror that the cameraman was arrested by the Slave Island Police and he will be produced before the Fort Magistrate today.
The incident reportedly occurred near the court’s main gate while Wickremesinghe was leaving after proceedings in a case filed against him by the Criminal Investigation Department.
In a statement issued that afternoon, the United National Party (UNP) said the security officer had lodged a police complaint. The party alleged that he was assaulted while providing security to the former President and was subsequently hospitalised.
The UNP also questioned whether security arrangements at the court premises had been adequate.
Several journalists reportedly recorded the incident. However, the allegation that the cameraman assaulted the officer has not been independently confirmed, and he has not made a statement.
Police are conducting further investigations. No official findings have been released on the circumstances of the incident or what led to it.
