The United National Party (UNP) said a security officer attached to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had lodged a police complaint over an alleged assault involving a video journalist from a private media organisation outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on September 30.
The incident reportedly occurred near the court’s main gate while Wickremesinghe was leaving after proceedings in a case filed against him by the Criminal Investigation Department.
In a statement issued that afternoon, the UNP alleged that the officer was assaulted while providing security to the former President and was subsequently hospitalised. The party also questioned whether security arrangements at the court premises had been adequate.
The incident was reportedly recorded by several journalists at the scene. However, the allegation that the video journalist assaulted the officer has not been independently confirmed, and the journalist has not made a statement.
Police are reportedly conducting further investigations. No official findings have been released on the circumstances of the incident or what led to it.
