An appeal has been lodged in the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court challenging a decision by the Colombo District Court, which rejected an application to compel Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a blood sample for a DNA test in an ongoing paternity suit.

The District Court dismissed the application after ruling that insufficient grounds were presented to justify ordering a DNA test.

The lawsuit was brought by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who claims Karunaratne fathered her child and is seeking a legal declaration to establish paternity. In her petition, Sewwandi requested the court to formally declare Karunaratne as the father and to order the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate reflecting his name.

According to the petitioner, the two were in a relationship from around 2023, but Karunaratne refused to acknowledge paternity once she became pregnant. Karunaratne has consistently denied the allegations and continues to oppose the request for a DNA test.
