Sri Lanka’s Department of Irrigation on Monday warned of a risk of flooding in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River Basin over the next 24 hours following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

The department said the warning, issued at 12:30 a.m. on August 3, will remain in effect until 12:30 a.m. on August 4. Areas at risk include Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Yatinuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Pasbage Korale, and Gangawata Korale, which are vulnerable to rising water levels.

Residents in low-lying areas along the river have been urged to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures against possible flooding. The department added that, with further rainfall expected, the public should exercise heightened caution.
