The final rites of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne will be held with full police honours today (20).
Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler said the decision was taken in recognition of Wickramaratne’s service as a former IGP.
The remains of Wickramaratne, who served as Sri Lanka’s 35th IGP, are currently lying at a private funeral parlour in Colombo and were open for the public to pay their respects from yesterday (19).
Wickramaratne died at his residence on 18 July. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Judicial Medical Officer of the Colombo East Base Hospital in Mulleriyawa returned an open verdict following the post-mortem examination, while samples have been sent to the Government Analyst (GA) for further examination.
Police said the GA has also taken custody of the firearm believed to be connected to the incident.
The Western Province South Crime Division and Malabe Police are conducting further investigations.
Statements have already been recorded from Wickramaratne’s wife and three security officers as part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
