Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says the Opposition will travel across the country to educate and empower the public about what he described as the Government’s proposed anti-democratic changes.
Premadasa questioned why the Government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was, in his view, betraying the mandate it received from the people and attempting to establish an authoritarian system of governance instead of safeguarding democracy.
He said the ongoing dialogue was only the beginning and that the initiative would be taken to every district in the country, together with lawyers and other groups committed to upholding the Constitution, the rule of law and justice.
Premadasa called on people to unite, irrespective of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, caste or social class, to defeat what he described as the Government’s anti-democratic and authoritarian agenda.
He further said a broad national movement would be built by raising awareness and empowering the public to oppose the proposed changes.
