The National Council for Road Safety has decided to launch a special inspection programme for all vehicles used for public transport, including buses.
Council Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the programme was scheduled to commence in September.
He noted that driver negligence and mechanical defects in vehicles were among the main causes of many road accidents involving public transport.
Accordingly, a systematic inspection mechanism will be introduced to ensure that all vehicles used for passenger transport meet required safety standards.
The Council has already begun the process of recruiting qualified technical officers to implement the programme, with applications currently being called.
The National Council for Road Safety said it expects to begin the inspections before the end of September, following the completion of the recruitment process.
