A proposal to impose the death penalty on drug traffickers has been raised by some parties during discussions of the “Ratama Ekata” National Operations Council, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today (11).
However, Jayatissa stressed that no final decision or consensus has been reached on implementing the proposal and that the matter would be considered further.
Responding to a question at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa said the proposal had emerged during discussions on the seriousness of organised crime and drug trafficking in the country.
“When discussing the gravity of this issue, this was a proposal or an idea put forward by some parties. There is still no final conclusion or agreement on how it would be done or implemented,” he said.
“It is merely one of the proposals made by different parties during discussions on the situation involving the underworld, drug trafficking and related activities,” Jayatissa added.
