Pivithuru Hetak National Council Chairman Athuraliye Rathana Thera will be appointed through the UNP national list while several other prominent persons who broke away from the UPFA will contest the election under the 'elephant' symbol.

This agreement was reached when the breakaway groups joined the UNP to form the United National Front for Good Governance.

Accordingly, JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka signed nomination papers to contest the election from Colombo under the 'elephant' symbol and Rajitha Senaratne signed nominations to contest from Kaluthara. Arjuna Ranatunga also signed nominations a short while ago, to contest from Gampaha District.

Meanwhile, former Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media Karunaratne Paranavithana signed nominations to contest from Ratnapura District under the UNP ticket.
