Army Launches Probe On Soldiers Arrested With Firearm

The Sri Lanka Army said that Military Police have launched an investigation into an incident where three army personnel were taken into police custody along with a weapon at Mirihana.
 
In a statement issued this afternoon, the army stated that Army Headquarters had informed Military Police of the incident and a probe has been launched. The army stressed that if found guilty, the soldiers would be severely punished according to provisions in the Army Act.
 
Police stated that three army personnel in civilian clothing were arrested by Mirihana Police last night while traveling in a white colored van with fake number plates. A firearm that was in the possession of the suspects was also seized, police added.
 
Preliminary investigations had revealed that the soldiers were attached to the personal security detail of a Major General.
