A Sinhalese individual was sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court Judge Lalith Jayasuriya on a case regarding an attempt to assassinate the then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

 

The individual named Maithri Saman Kumara is a resident of Gampaha. He pleaded guilty failing to reveal his association with LTTE cadres. He had been arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

 

The attempt on the life of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was to be carried out on June 15, 2008. A member of the LTTE named Suresh Kumar had been assigned this operation by the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.
