Minister Sanath Jayasuriya's mother Breda Jayasuriya announced her decision to join the United National Party yesterday at a meeting in Malimbada in Matara District.

Speaking at the meeting she said that her family had been traditional supporters of the UNP. She said that she supported her son during the 2010 election. However, thereafter she did not vote in elections as she could not betray the UNP, she added.

She joined the UNP at the request of Sagala Rathnayake, former MP from Matara District.

Sanath Jayasuriya is not contesting the election and resigned from his post as Matara SLFP Organizer recently.
