Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the UNP destroyed the agricultural sector in its history and will do the same if it comes to power once again.

 

Speaking at a UPFA rally in Naula yesterday, Rajapaksa said that there was no word in the UNP manifesto on the continuation of the fertilizer subsidy. Rajapaksa pledged that the subsidy will be continued under a UPFA government, as it was done during his tenure as president.

 

He also said that the UNP was not attending to the interests of the farmers. It is giving the message that paddy fields must be reclaimed and used for other purposes, Rajapaksa added. The agricultural sector has suffered serious setbacks during the last few months, he argued.

 

The UNP will only increase the problems of the agriculture sector, Rajapaksa also said.
