The UPFA was defeated in the Mawathagama Electorate in Kurunegala District, despite the fact that the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had led the UPFA team in the district.
The UNP won 32,160 votes (49.94%) and the UPFA managed to poll only 28,870 votes (44.83%).
Meanwhile, the JVP managed to poll only 2,927 votes.
However, UPFA has managed to win several other seats in Kurunegala District.
