Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) National Organizer Bimal Rathnayake on Thursday (20) stated that the party decided to name Sunil Handunnetti as a national list MP because of strong requests made by both JVP supporters and national list candidates.
When asked about the controversial reports regarding the national list appointments, Rathnayake told Asian Mirror that many national list candidates requested to name a full-time JVP member as national list MP.
Therefore the party decided to name Sunil Handunnetti and former Auditor-General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne as national list MPs after a discussion, Rathnayake said.
He also asserted that there was no spilt inside the party over the national list nominations as claimed by certain media reports.
The JVP named former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti and former Auditor-General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne as its national list MPs today (20).
Mayadunne led the list submitted to the Elections Commissioner by the JVP on July 13. Handunnetti contested the election from Matara District and but failed to enter the parliament.
