Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse a protest organized by the Inter University Students' Union at Ward Place, Colombo 7.

The protest march, which started near the Fort Railway Station, approached the University Grants Commission, when the police anti-riot squad blocked its path.

Several students were reportedly arrested at the protest.

Severe traffic congestion was also reported in the Town Hall area.
