Cabinet Approves Vote on Account; 2025 Budget Speech on February 17

November 26, 2024

The Cabinet has approved an Interim Vote on Account to cover the first four months of 2025, with a parliamentary debate scheduled for December 5 and 6, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

The 2025 Budget proposal will be presented to Parliament on January 9, 2025. The Second Reading, including the Budget Speech, will take place on February 17, followed by the Third Reading debate from February 27 to March 21.

Dr. Jayatissa said that the budget aims to restore public trust and initiate development projects aligned with the public's expectations. It will allocate funds in compliance with the Public Finance Management Act, No. 44 of 2024, ensuring ministries operate within specified expenditure limits.

The Interim Vote on Account includes provisions for government recurrent and capital expenditure, public debt servicing, and debt restructuring, addressing the lack of time to pass the full Appropriation Bill for 2025
