The Police today blamed the University Grants Commission for the incidents at Ward Place yesterday, saying that the dispute could have been resolved if there was a responsible official to discuss the matter with the students.

Speaking at a media conference at the Colombo DIG Office, Senior DIG Pujith Jayasundara made this accusation at the UGC.

Meanwhile SSP Champika Siriwardena denied that a police officer attacked a female student, saying that he was helping her to stand up. He made this claim despite the fact that the policeman was carrying a baton and a stick in his hands.

Siriwardena vowed that no such attack took place, refuting photographic evidence. These photos were published on media to tarnish the image of the police, he claimed.
