Police In Hot Water Over Obstruction In Embilipitiya: Chief Justice Instructs Journalists To File FR Petitions

The Chief Justice today instructed the President of Editors' Guild Siri Ranasinghe to inform journalists who were allegedly obstructed by police in Embilipitiya, to file Fundamental Rights Petitions against the Police within one month.

Chief Justice K. Sripavan made this direction today, when the complaint regarding the incident was taken up for consideration as a special miscellaneous case.

Siri Ranasinghe recently made a request from the Chief Justice to inquire into the incident where a Police Constable had confiscated notebooks of journalists reporting the Magisterial Inquiry into the controversial death of a youth in Embilipitiya.

The CJ informed the Editors' Guild that he could not give an order based on the complaint.
