A group of 18 UPFA local council members from the Galle and Matara Districts filed a Fundamental Rights petition with the Supreme Court today, requesting an order to hold the Local Government Elections immediately.

If the election cannot be held in the near future, the petitioners requested for the reinstatement of the former Local Government bodies that were dissolved.

These local councilors represent the 'Joint Opposition' faction of the UPFA.
