Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the government has taken steps to hand over the operations at the Mattala International Airport to a private firm.

He said that tenders have been already called for this.

Mattala, the second international airport in the country, was recently dubbed as the world's emptiest international airport by the Forbes Magazine. However, the government has insisted that the airport will be utilized in a productive manner.
