Cabinet Approves Proposal to Reactivate Light Railway Transit (LRT) Project, Seeking to Resolve Diplomatic Tensions

In a fresh development, the cabinet has given its approval to revive the Light Railway Transit (LRT) project, signaling the government's commitment to modernizing the country's transportation infrastructure.

The project, originally initiated during the Yahapalanaya government, was abruptly terminated under the presidency of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The decision to revive the project seeks to resolves diplomatic tensions that arose between Sri Lanka and Japan due to the project's cancellation.

The LRT project aimed to introduce a state-of-the-art transportation system to ease congestion and improve connectivity in the country's urban centers. The initial plan included the construction of an extensive railway network, integrating light rail with existing transportation systems. The project's termination had resulted in disappointment among citizens and strained bilateral relations with Japan, one of Sri Lanka's key development partners.

As part of the reactivation process, the government will work towards preparing an appropriate timeframe for entering into a fresh agreement with Japan.
