An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, led by Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer, arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday, November 17. Today, the team is set to meet with officials from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) as part of ongoing discussions regarding the country’s economic recovery.
Following the CBSL meeting, the IMF representatives are expected to engage with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and key members of the newly-formed government to review Sri Lanka’s economic reform program.
At the conclusion of the meetings, the IMF team will hold a press conference to provide updates on the third review of Sri Lanka’s recovery plan under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF). Successful completion of this review could trigger the release of the next tranche of the IMF’s bailout package to Sri Lanka.
The IMF has already disbursed over USD 1 billion in support, as part of a larger USD 2.9 billion EFF, which is intended to aid Sri Lanka in recovering from its ongoing economic crisis. The IMF’s previous disbursements include USD 333 million in March 2023, USD 337 million in December 2023, and another USD 337 million in June 2024.
